No one knows how old Peppo is but tales date back 1847 to just before the first stripes appeared on a candy cane. The origins of the candy cane’s stripes are one of candy history’s great mysteries.
Peppo was working on confections,
mixing and pouring day and night until the flavors of wintergreen and peppermint appeared in 1899.
Peppo was by Father Gregory Keller’s side in 1952 when he introduced his automated candy machine.
It is hard today to image a candy cane without color, a peppermint without it’s stripes,
or a world without wintergreen and peppermint.
Shall we thank Peppo?
He just grins and wiggles his gum drop nose and toddles back to his candy vats,
a new sweet scent is everywhere…
