The Maddy Story

Maddy lived high in the mountains far away from cities or towns.
This woodland creature refused to do the “Snow Thing” and growl. Unlike his relatives and the others of his kind, creating chaos never came to his mind.
One night he saw tree lights far away in a town and watched spellbound, as everyone sang and gathered round.
He ran, hoping to join in, but when he was spotted songs became screams.
Every year when carols began Maddy  would move tree to tree, down the hill. He came to know every song and dreamed of spreading goodwill.
One day, Maddy was practicing carols, dancing in the snow when two children saw him and watched in awe, quiet and still. They were drawn to the sweet voice, and seeing nothing to fear, took Maddy’s large paw and danced with cheer, singing for hours as Maddy wept happy tears. At dusk the children asked Maddy to join them on their journey home. The three skipped down the mountain arms linked reciting poems. As they reached town the tree lights turned on that night. The trio sang and soon the villagers appeared. It was quite clear, the elders could see, in Maddy—the Snow Thing, there was nothing to fear. Hand in hand, old and young, all  joined in and carols with Maddy were sung, together as one. A new yearly tradition in the village had begun.
