The Dill Story
The tradition of the essigurke or the Dill as well call him,
is pure family fun for everyone.
The custom started many years ago in Germany,
where a pickle ornament was the last to be placed on the tree,
in a hidden spot, late on Christmas eve.
The first child to find the pickle received a special gift,
and adults were blessedly struck with a year of good luck.
Always found with a smirk,
our Polish Dill is akin to all of his German essigurkes,
but of a slightly different vine and brine.
As JingleNog legend would have it,
this swift footed Christmas pickle is a perennial hit,
keeping families happily in search of him for many an eve,
eagerly awaiting the annual chance to seek, retrieve and receive.
Dill delights in the game of finding the pickle,
and nothing gives him more of a tickle,
than leaving you in a pickle.
