Monkeyin Around's Story
Everything calls and although he knows he should refrain, he simply cannot be restrained. Be it the shiny red chrome of the fire trucks, the whistles on the new trains, or the cellophane wrap of the candy canes, his curiosity cannot be contained. Swinging from the rafters on jump ropes marked for Scottie, drawing with the new crayon paints labeled for Emily or Lonnie, or cracking nuts with the jaws of the freshly painted crackers, while playing with the checker and tea sets it does not matter, in a never ending pattern, new attracts stronger than the later. Unwrapping presents for Katie, Brad and Alex, discretion is not his talent. When no creatures stir he starts pogo stick races with the deer. It is only a moment before there is a new idea. No telling what will next enter into this monkey’s head, while he is neatly folding blankets and tucking dolls into beds, or trimming ribbon and wrapping stacks til they are in shreds. He plays cards and makes puzzles while everyone else naps, before he is looking for “something” inside of Santa’s sack. Later he opens gingerbread houses and licks them, samples ribbon candy and test stickers on toy drums, then ties knots on laces that cannot be undone. He tries on the roller, hockey and ice skates regardless of size, to see if they could work on the new snow slides. His sweet earnest apologies make it hard to stay upset, for everyone knows a monkey finds it hard to rest.
